LASPOTECH NASU, ASUP, SSANIP laud Ambode over Sogunro's appointment
Three staff unions of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) on Saturday welcomed the appointment of the 10th Rector from within the institution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the unions had in April vowed to resist any effort by the state government to appoint an outsider as the Rector.
The unions are the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP).
The Governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode had on Thursday June 25 announced the appointment of Oluyinka Sogunro as the Rector to replace Dr Abulazeez Lawal whose tenure expired on June 1.
Sogunro joined the polytechnic in January 1990 as Lecturer III in the Department of Mathematics and was the institution’s Deputy Rector, Administration.
Representatives of the unions in separate interviews with NAN said the appointment had put paid to their collective struggles for the appointment of a serving staff as Rector.
Thomas Awoyemi, the Chairman of SSANIP, said:``It is good news. We just need to appreciate the state government for giving us what we want that settles it.
``As long as the person that was appointed is an internal candidate that is how I and my union want it.
``He has been on ground for many years; in other words, whoever is to be appointed would have known the problems before assumption of duty.
``It will be easier tackling the issues and lead the staff. Even those of us who are to be led would have known the antecedents and character of such a person.
``We expect him to provide the best leadership -- meeting the requests of staff within the available resources, being transparent, and also making judicious use of resources.’’
On his part, Akinawon Fasasi, the Chairman, of NASU, urged Sogunro to improve the institution’s internally generated revenue, noting that the institution was experiencing challenges in the area of finance.
``We urgently need to augment the government’s subvention for the payment of our salaries.
``He will have to re-energise the internally generated revenue sources so that we will be able to sustain the payment of salaries.’’
Fassasi also urged the rector to leverage on the infrastructural development successes recorded by the previous administration as well as focus on training and capacity building.
``He too should take that as a challenge and be ready to surpass that achievement,’’ he also told NAN.
``He should see to the development of staff in terms of training and research because the strength of any organisation is the capacity of its human resources.’’
Steven Adesemoye, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, advised the rector to bring all stakeholders together for the development of the school.
He said:``I want to also use this medium to call other candidates who lost to him to join hands for a better institution.
``He should be watchful of fifth columnists because people will come and tell him stories …he should double-check.’’

WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE SUG PRESIDENT LASPOTECH 2014/2015
The president of the Student Union Government, Luther Juwon released a welcome address to Laspotians and here is what he had to say;
Greatest Laspotians,
I, Comrade Luther Juwon, president of the student union government 2014/2015 and all EXCOs hereby welcome you all to a new semester.
I hope that you had a good break and that you enjoyed the time you had to share with your friends and family. I also hope that you are well rested, refreshed and ready to engage anew.
The new semester promises to be exciting, fun-filled and fulfilling as the Government have various activities that will give you a wonderful experience on campus lined up.
I will like to reiterate the fact that the Government is committed to serving the students and also fulfilling ALL promises made. The previous semester was very short because of the general elections and the length was a huge factor in the implementations of some of the activities scheduled but I must however stress that it didn't go without us doing anything.
The government is not detached from you all, your worries are our worries and likewise, your happiness is our happiness. To further buttress this, I would like to give you an instance; Transportation challenge was witnessed on campus last semester as a result of the bike and tricycle scarcity that emanated from the safety measures implemented by the DSA. On noting the problem, the Union immediately swinged into action and as a result, we have brought in new cabs, bikes and tricycles that would operate on campus in order to ease the stress and ultimately solve the problem.
As I mentioned earlier, we have programmes and activities that cut across academics and social life lined up for you this semester, "Thank God it's Friday show" to Hold at Isolo campus on Friday 20/3/2015 and other programmes will be communicated to you as at when due. For now, I only wish to welcome you all back on campus and also reassure you that we are committed to serving you and making your stay on campus wonderful.
On a final note, I urge you all to continue to be good ambassadors of the institution, pay serious attention to your academics and act within the confines of the law.
Get ready to party this Friday laspotians, All road leads to Isolo campus.. Leggo!
Welcome and have a wonderful semester!
Best Regards,
Comrade Luther Juwon, SUG President (2014/2015)
